Stroller advice in English, from someone who has pushed more than 800 strollers in Japan.

Choosing a stroller in Japan is different. Train stations, narrow sidewalks, small entrances, bicycles, and the models and prices you find here are not the same as back home. Tell me about your family and your daily life, and I will email you three strollers that fit your life in Japan, with the reasons.

What you get

  • Three stroller recommendations chosen for your family, your home and the way you get around
  • Why each one fits, and what you give up with each
  • What to check in the store before you buy
  • Where to buy in Japan, and whether to wait for a new model
  • If you may move abroad: how easy it is to get repairs and parts outside Japan

Everything is in English, by email. You will hear from me within 3 business days (Japan time).

Why ask me

  • I have run Tokyo Babycar DB, a Japanese stroller review site, since 2012. Over 14 years I have pushed more than 800 strollers.
  • I answer about 100 stroller consultations a year in Japanese. I have also been interviewed as a stroller expert by Kodansha’s web magazine.
  • I keep my own database of about 1,200 strollers sold in Japan: weight, folded size, handle height, seat height and how they ride.
  • No maker or store pays me to recommend a stroller. Your fee is what pays for my time.

Things I take into account in Japan

  • Train stations: ticket gates, elevators, crowded trains
  • Narrow or busy sidewalks, hills, and the roads near your home
  • Small entrances (genkan), elevators and storage space at home
  • The Japanese safety standard (SG): A-type strollers can be used from about 1 month old, B-type from about 7 months
  • Bicycles with child seats, taxis and car seats
  • Japanese brands (Combi, Aprica, Pigeon and others) and imported brands, and their prices in Japan

What Japanese clients say

Translated from Japanese.

“Thanks to you, I found a good stroller very efficiently. You were more neutral than any shop assistant, and you know an incredible amount about the products.”

“I learned that the strollers I was considering were not very different in how they handle rough roads. If I had not asked, I would have bought one of them and regretted it.”
